1. Does the word Trinity only mean that there are three divine persons who are in unity?
The Word Trinity can simply mean a group of three people or things. That’s the simple definition. If that was all that Trinity means, there probably would not be any opposition to using that word to define the persons or powers relating to Deity. But there is a deeper definition that become problematic in terms of biblical authority.
As it relates to religion, Trinity is defined as belief in the Christian Godhead as one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So, belief in the Trinity is the belief that God consists of three equal persons, and that these three divine equal persons are united into one God, making three equals equal one.
This concept tends to be quite confusing, and unexplainable. Many serious students of inspired writings are coming to see that inspiration does not support such a belief. Thus, there is in our midst the great Godhead debate. Deep study reveals that this belief of a three-in-one God is an assumed doctrine using human reasoning without biblical support. Even those theologians who promote this belief will admit that it is not directly substantiated by the word of God. There is no specific scripture which declares that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit comprise one God.

2. What does it mean to believe in the Trinity?
There is quite a bit of confusion and variation on this doctrine within Adventism itself. In one version of the trinity, it is taught that there is one divine Being called God that is made up of three divine persons. Another version is that there are three co-eternal divine persons who are united into one God. Their unity of purpose, character and mind is what unites them as one God.
Now, what the doctrine of the trinity? it is actually a man-made assumptive interpretation of Scripture. It certainly went through some variation over the centuries, as men were seeking to harmonize the fact that there is only one God (a singularity) yet with two Persons directly called God in Scripture (this would be the Father and the Son) and one Person indirectly called God therein (this would be the Spirit). And, as contradictory as it might seem, men just merged the ideas and said that there were 3 Persons yet One Being.

3. What does the Seventh-day Adventist Church teach regarding the Trinity?
Fundamental Beliefs ...
2. Trinity: There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7.)
3.Father: God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation….
4. Son: God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ….
5. Holy Spirit: God the eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption….

4. Have all Seventh-day Adventists been taught the trinity doctrine before they were baptized?
Let’s consider some historical facts: The Seventh-day Adventist Church existed for nearly sixty years without any official baptismal vows. The first known, semi-official set of vows within the Seventh-day Adventist Church were published in 1920 by R. A. Underwood, which set the stage for all upcoming baptismal vows in the church. It includes this heart-searching question: 4. Do you recognize in your baptismal vow that you are taking upon yourself the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and that these omnipotent powers are pledged to you, as a child of God, to give you faith and power to live the Christian life?
This statement is very similar to several quotations from Ellen White, who had passed away in 1915, five years earlier. These are two among many similar quotes.
EGW: “At the time of our baptism, we pledged ourselves in the presence of the three most powerful agencies of heaven—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost—that we would henceforth walk in newness of life.” 18LtMs, Lt 160, 1903, par. 3
EGW: “As a Christian submits to the solemn rite of baptism, the three highest powers in the universe,—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,—place their approval on his act, pledging themselves to exert their power in his behalf as he strives to honor God.” ST August 16, 1905, par. 1
These two inspired quotes and the baptismal statement are definitely not Trinitarian statements, and are in harmony with the published non-trinitarian Fundamental Principles of 1872 and 1889.

5. What are the Fundamental Principles relating to Deity first written in 1872?
Fundamental Principles #1 & 2
- I - That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things, omnipotent, omniscient, and eternal, infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable, and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit.
II - That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, the one by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist…A Declaration of the Fundamental Principles Taught and Practiced by the Seventh-day Adventists,” 1872, from Adventist Archives
These two non-trinitarian, non-tritheistic Godhead beliefs, along with 23 other beliefs were first written in 1872. They were published in a tract for the public called, A Declaration of the Fundamental Principles Taught and Practiced by the Seventh-day Adventists. They appeared three times in the Signs of the Times (June 4th 1874, January 28th 1875, February 21st 1878), the Review and Herald twice (November 24th 1874, August 22nd 1912), the Gospel Sickle (April 1st 1888) and the British Present Truth (August 16th 1888). They were listed in the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook in 1889 and 1905 and yearly from 1907 to 1914. These Fundamental Principles were recognized as the belief of the body of Seventh-day Adventists, as they were printed in the Seventh-day Adventist Yearbook until 1914, the last yearbook printed during the life of Ellen White.

6. What are some of the baptismal vows that were set forth after 1920?
The first official baptismal of the Seventh-day Adventist Church was in 1932, placed in the first church manual, which asked: (#1) “Do you believe in the existence of God as a personal being, who is our heavenly Father?” and (#7) “Do you claim by faith in Christ that God for Christ’s sake has forgiven your past sins, and that He is yours and you are His?”
This is also not a Trinitarian baptismal vow. It is clearly non-Trinitarian. God is seen as a singular personal being, our Heavenly Father. This is in harmony with the Fundamental Principles of 1872 and 1889.
Other non-trinitarian vows can be found in later years, such as these:
I believe in God the Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit. Deuteronomy 6:4: Matthew 28:19: 2Corinthians 13:14: Ephesians 4:4-6: 1Peter 1:2: 1Timothy 1:17: Revelation 14:7
This simplified baptismal vow is mainly geared toward children, and has been used over the years. The above vow regarding the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit is not specifically a Trinitarian vow. Both sides of the “Godhead debate” would approve of this vow.
For more information, see: Adventist Timeline of Change - As It Reads
7. As the years progressed, what are some quasi-Trinitarian vows that have been presented to the baptismal candidate?
The following baptismal vows are still not clearly Trinitarian, but they are getting closer to promoting the Trinitarian belief:
I believe that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are co-eternal members of the Godhead (Matthew 28:19-20; Colossians 2:9; John 8:58) - Godhead
I believe in God the Father, in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit, and that they have always been and always will be.

8. The following baptismal affirmation is actually defining the Trinitarian belief:
I believe in one God, a unity of three coeternal Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each of whom is fully divine and has existed from all eternity.
This baptismal statement was made official in 1981 when it was published in the church manual.
9. Do all the Adventists theologians teach the Trinity the same way?
No. There are a surprising number of statements made by denominational theologians and professors which are contradictory to each other. These will be considered later on.
For more information, see: What is the Doctrine of Trinity? Part 2-Variants Among Seventh-day Adventist Trinitarians - As It Reads
10. Is it acceptable for Adventists to have different beliefs about the Trinity?
Yes, many variants seem to be acceptable to the denominational leaders, as long as the three-in-one God is professed. Here is a statement made by a Seventh-day Adventist pioneer.
“This has been a popular doctrine and regarded as orthodox ever since the bishop of Rome was elevated to the popedom on the strength of it. It is accounted dangerous heresy to reject it; but each person is permitted to explain the doctrine in his own way. All seem to think they must hold it, but each has perfect liberty to take his own way to reconcile its contradictory propositions; and hence a multitude of views are held concerning it by its friends, all of them orthodox, I suppose, as long as they nominally assent to the doctrine.” Raymond Cottrell, SDA pioneer, Review and Herald, June 1, 1869

11. What is Tritheism? Are some Seventh-day Adventists Tritheists?
Tritheism is the belief in 3 gods. It does not have to be a conception of the Biblical God although it is most often mentioned in that setting. A Wikipedia article does a great service in giving a more nuanced definition.
“Tritheism (from Greek τριθεΐα, "three divinity"[1]) is a polytheistic nontrinitarian Christian conception of God in which the unity of the Trinity and, by extension, monotheism are denied. It asserts that, rather than being single God of three eternally consubstantial Persons, the Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit are three ontologically separate Gods. [Tritheism: Wikipedia]
This definition is excellent. Tritheism means “three ontologically separate Gods.”
Or, if you prefer to hear from the wisdom of a Seventh-day Adventist pioneer, J.H. Waggoner shared an excellent definition:
There were some very early that turned the doctrine of the Trinity into Tritheism, and, instead of three divine persons under the economy of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, brought in three collateral, co-ordinate, and self-originated beings, making them three absolute and independent principles, without any relation of Father or Son, which is the most proper notion of three gods. (Signs of the Times, January 27, 1881)
For more information, see: The Pioneers and the Trinity in Adventism
12. Is believing in the Godhead and the Trinity the same thing?
No. A belief in the three persons of the Godhead is not a declaration that the Godhead is a single three-in-one God.
In the following quotations, the important point to notice is that Ellen White always uses plural pronouns in referring to these three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Notice the use of plural pronouns in referring to these three below:
- “The Godhead was stirred with pity for the race, and the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit gave themselves to the working out of the plan of redemption.” - CH 222.2, 1923. iii)
- “The three powers of the Godhead have pledged their might to carry out the purpose that God had in mind when He gave to the world the unspeakable gift of His Son.” - RH July 18, 1907, par. 3
By referring to the three powers, or persons, or personalities with plural pronouns, the three-person one-God idea is invalidated. The one Triune God is called a “He,” not “They.”
The Trinity doctrine refers to the three-in-one God as “He.” Some theologians call this three-person God a one God being, (Trinity) and others refer to three divine persons as a collective unit, or unity. (Tritheism)

13. Does inspiration say that the eternal Godhead is three persons?
Yes, eternal Godhead, the Heavenly Trio definitely consists of three persons.
Ellen White writes: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, the eternal Godhead is involved in the action required to make assurance to the human agent to unite all heaven to contribute to the exercise of human faculties to reach and embrace the fulness of the threefold powers to unite in the great work appointed, confederating the heavenly powers with the human, that men may become, through heavenly efficiency, partakers of the divine nature and workers together with Christ. 19LtMs, Ms 45, 1904, par. 16
For more information, see: SDA trinity theology
14. Is believing in the Heavenly Trio and the Trinity the same thing?
No. The fact that there are three living persons OF the heavenly trio is NOT the doctrine of the trinity. Many wrongly conclude that any mention of three persons, powers, characters, personalities, dignitaries, etc. is describing the doctrine of the Trinity. However, the Trinity doctrine defines ONE GOD in three persons. Without the ONE-GOD THREE-PERSON aspect, you don’t have a Trinity doctrine.
The problem is, when you define the ONE GOD as a unity of THREE PERSONS, then the God that is worshiped is a single unit, or unity, and it takes three persons to constitute that composite God. This one God is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, a one divine Trinitarian Being. This is what our church teaches. But as we shall see later, this unbiblical belief gives rise to other issues that undermine the purity of the gospel.

15. Is believing in the Heavenly Trio and the Trinity the same thing?
Yes, that is the preferred title for some who endeavor to stay very close to the truths specifically found in inspiration. They appreciate “every word of God.”
Triotarians believe everything specifically as found in the words of inspiration. They don’t assume or conjecture regarding things that are not revealed to us.
16. Does inspiration tell us that there are three living persons of the Heavenly Trio?
EGW: “There are three living persons of the heavenly trio; in the name of these three great powers—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized, and these powers will co-operate with the obedient subjects of heaven in their efforts to live the new life in Christ....” SpTB07 63.2
The fact that there are three living persons of the heavenly trio does not constitute the doctrine of the trinity. This is where many SDAs are confused. They think that any mention of the three persons equals the doctrine of the trinity. This is false. In order to be a trinitarian you have to make the identity of the one God into three persons, saying that it takes 3 persons to make one God. That is the key point here.

17. What do people mean when they say they believe in the Heavenly Trio but not the Trinity?
Believing in the Heavenly Trio is taking the inspired writing just as it reads, no more, no less. So, since the Word of God refers to baptism in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the the Holy Ghost, and since Ellen White writes of the three living persons in the Heavenly Trio, the Triotarians accept that as divine truth. There are indeed three persons. But inspiration never declares that those three persons are one God, as a single unity, referred to as “He.” So, Triotarians do believe in the three persons of the Heavenly Trio, but they do not accept the non-biblical assumption that these three are considered to be one God, a three-in-one Trinity God, neither in a Trinitarian or Tritheistic manner.

18. Can it be offensive or derogatory to call Triotarians Arians or Anti-trinitarians?
Yes, because these terms are often used in a demeaning and negative manner. There is an unsubstantiated claim that Arius, in the third century, believed Christ was created. Triotarians do NOT believe that Christ was created, so it is a false accusation to label them as Arians or Semi-Arians. That is a dishonest label.
Labeling someone as an “Anti-trinitarian” is also an unkind tactic. Now, calling someone a Trinitarian is not seen as a negative label to those who believe in the three-in-one God. But Trinitarians would probably NOT appreciate being called an Anti-Triotarians, or an Anti-“take the inspired writings as they read.” Likewise, Triotarians do not appreciate being labeled as Anti-Trinitarians, because it is a way to disparage and marginalize those outside of mainstream ideology. While Triotarians are not trinitarians, their belief is not based on a negative element, but on the positive belief in the truth about God as the inspiration reveals it. They are “Entire Inspiration Believers” who cherish the truth as God has revealed it.

19. Since Seventh-day Adventists are allowed to believe variants of the Trinity, shouldn’t it also be acceptable to believe in the Heavenly Trio, exactly as is found in inspiration?
One would think that it would be reasonable to allow the members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to believe as the early pioneers and Ellen White believed and taught in their formative years. To force one to believe an assumed doctrine not specified in scripture doesn’t seem reasonable. Yet, this is the situation in the Adventist church today.
Ellen White gives excellent counsel:
“When differences arise among brethren as to the understanding of any point of truth, there is one Bible rule to follow. In the spirit of meekness and love for God and one another, let brethren come together, and after earnest prayer, with sincere desire to know God's will, study the Bible with the spirit of a little child, to see how closely they can draw together, and not sacrifice anything but their selfish dignity.” 1888 1008, 1009
“Nothing frightens me more than to see the spirit of variance manifested by our brethren. We are on dangerous ground when we cannot meet together like Christians, and courteously examine controverted points. I feel like fleeing from the place lest I receive the mold of those who cannot candidly investigate the doctrines of the Bible. Those who cannot impartially examine the evidences of a position that differs from theirs, are not fit to teach in any department of God's cause.”—The Review and Herald, December 15, 1885. 1 SM 406-416

20. Do the church leaders encourage open discussion regarding the various beliefs about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
Unfortunately, open discussion and group study of this topic is strongly discouraged by the current leadership. Many sincere and diligent Bible students in the Seventh-day Adventist church desire to show others, from the words of inspiration, those truths that build upon the original truth revealed to the early pioneers as they came together to study and pray. But, since these inspired words are not in harmony with the current understanding, they are seen to be divisive and heretical. This is a tragic development within God’s last day church.

21. Does the Seventh-day Adventist church have a creed that members are required to believe in order to remain members?
Unfortunately, our Fundamental Beliefs have been made into a creed, in order to enforce uniformity of belief. Our early pioneers saw the danger of this type of creed. J.N. Loughborough wrote:
"The first step of apostasy is to get up a creed, telling us what we shall believe. The second is, to make that creed a test of fellowship. The third is to try members by that creed. The fourth to denounce as heretics those who do not believe that creed. And fifth, to commence persecution against such." RH, October 8, 1861

22. Are members sometimes disfellowshipped if they don’t believe the doctrine of the Trinity as it is worded in Fundamental Belief #2?
It is a fact that many Seventh-day Adventists have been disfellowshipped for not believing in the doctrine of the Trinity. Now, each case is unique, and it is possible that there was some divisive behavior involved, but this is not necessarily the case. The unchristlike, divisive spirit could also reside in those desiring to expel those who don’t comply with man’s creeds. Sometimes the most sincere and dedicated Christians are the ones who are cast out. But the real reason for this Godhead debate could involve the fact that freedom is not allowed to study inspiration for oneself and follow one’s own conviction of truth. This is most unfortunate.
23. Has the Seventh-day Adventist church always believed in the Trinity?
All those who are honest students of the history of the Seventh-day Adventist movement will agree that the early pioneers DID NOT subscribe to the Trinity doctrine, in any version of it.
“Likewise, the Trinitarian understanding of God, now part of our fundamental beliefs was not generally held by the early Adventists. Even a few today do not subscribe to it.” Adventist Review Jan 6, 1994 p. 10, written by William G. Johnsson, Editor of the Adventist Review, Article “Present Truth – Walking in God’s Light”.)
It is admitted by all that there has been a change. The disagreement is over what was the change, why there was a change, when there was a change, who initiated the change, and how the change came about! Many revisionists historical accounts are set forth, to the confusion of the readers. There are fabrications and twisting of accounts. Thus, we cannot afford to trust someone’s biased interpretation of history. We must become diligent students for ourselves. We can find the truth about our history in the inspired writings.

24. It is acknowledged that there was a startling change in Adventist beliefs. Is it not interesting that Ellen White prophesied that the omega departure would be of a most startling nature?
“Adventist beliefs have changed over the years under the impact of ‘present truth’. Most startling is the teaching regarding Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.—Ibid.
EGW: “’Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.’ We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature.” {1SM 197.4}

25. Did all the early pioneers believe the same thing about God when they first came together?
EGW: “After the great disappointment there were few who set themselves to seek the Word with all their heart. But some souls would not settle down in discouragement and deny that the Lord had led them. To these the truth was opened point by point. — (11LtMs, Ms 32, 1896, par. 18)
EGW: “We would come together burdened in soul, praying that we might be one in faith and doctrine; for we knew that Christ is not divided. One point at a time was made the subject of investigation. — (CET 192.4)
EGW: “Solemnity characterized these councils of investigation. The Scriptures were opened with a sense of awe. Often we fasted, that we might be better fitted to understand the truth. — (CET 192.4)
EGW: “Many of our people do not realize how firmly the foundations of our faith has been laid. My husband, Elder Joseph Bates, Father Pierce, Elder [Hiram] Edson, and others who were keen, noble, and true, were among those who, after the passing of the time in 1844, searched for the truth as for hidden treasure. — (SpTB02 56.4)

Questions: 26 - 50
26. How did they deal with their differences, seeing they came from many denominations?
EGW: “In those early days, how many seasons of fervent prayer were held! A holy, submissive, Christlike spirit was breathed upon us; for we knew that the Saviour was with us…. God’s wonderful, miracle-working power was exercised according to our faith. — (20LtMs, Lt 191, 1905, par. 5)
EGW: “If one brother rebuked another for his dullness of comprehension in not understanding a passage as he understood it, the one rebuked would afterward take his brother by the hand, and say, ‘Let us not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Jesus is with us; let us keep a humble and teachable spirit;’ and the brother addressed would say, ‘Forgive me, brother, I have done you an injustice.’ Then we would bow down in another season of prayer. — (RH July 26, 1892, par. 4)
27. Were the early pioneers diligent students in their search for truth?
EGW: “In the early days of the message, when our numbers were few, we studied diligently to understand the meaning of many scriptures. At times it seemed as if no explanation could be given. My mind seemed to be locked to an understanding of the Word; — (RH June 14, 1906, par. 18)
EGW: “I met with them, and we studied and prayed earnestly. Often we remained together until late at night, and sometimes through the entire night, praying for light and studying the Word. — (SpTB02 56.4)
EGW: “Again and again these brethren came together to study the Bible, in order that they might know its meaning, and be prepared to teach it with power. — (SpTB02 56.4)
28. Did the early pioneers pray earnestly and long, pleading with God for understanding?
EGW: “Sometimes the entire night was spent in solemn investigation of the Scriptures, that we might understand the truth for our time. — (RH July 26, 1892, par. 4)
EGW: “Our seasons of prayer together were blessed of God, and light was given us at those times that is now shining forth in clear, bright rays. — (23LtMs, Lt 56, 1908, par. 4)
29. Did God lead them in a miraculous way, to bring them into unity?
EGW: “Truth was made to shine forth, beautiful in its simplicity, dignified with a power and invested with an assurance unknown before the disappointment. We could then proclaim the message in unity. — (11LtMs, Ms 32, 1896, par. 18)
EGW: “We have had a precious time calling up the experiences we have had together in the earlier part of our work. We could both relate much of the wonderful working of the grace of God which has confirmed us in every point of our faith under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and we knew and could testify of the great working of the Lord in such wonderful power in the early period of this work, which has established, strengthened, settled us where not a pin or pillar can be moved in our experience in the great living, testing truths for this time. — (21LtMs, Lt 407, 1906, par. 3)
30. Did they enjoy perfect harmony as the Lord made the truth clear to them?
EGW: “On some occasions the Spirit of God would come upon me, and difficult portions were made clear through God's appointed way, and then there was perfect harmony. We were all of one mind and one spirit. — (RH, July 26, 1892)
EGW: “The leading points of our faith as we hold them today were firmly established. Point after point was clearly defined, and all the brethren came into harmony. — (18 LtMs, Ms 135, 1903)
EGW: “The whole company of believers were united in the truth. There were those who came in with strange doctrines, but we were never afraid to meet them. Our experience was wonderfully established by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. — (18 LtMs, Ms 135, 1903)
EGW: “We are one in faith in the fundamental truths of God’s Word. And one object must be kept in view constantly, that is harmony and co-operation must be maintained without compromising one principle of truth. — (5LtMs, Lt 37, 1887)
31. Did they become a loving, close-knit group of believers after they came into unity?
EGW: “In the early days of our experience in the message, the Spirit of God often came upon a few of us as we were assembled, and I was taken away in vision. The Lord gave such light and evidence, such comfort and hope and joy, that His praises were upon our lips. — (PH116 4.1)
EGW: “At times the power of God came upon us in a marked manner, and when clear light revealed the points of truth, we would weep and rejoice together. We loved Jesus; we loved one another. — (RH, July 26, 1892)
32. Were there miracles that took place during that time that showed God was leading them?
EGW: “Sabbath afternoon one of our number was sick, and requested prayers that he might be healed. We all united in applying to the Physician who never lost a case, and while healing power came down, and the sick was healed, the Spirit fell upon me and I was taken off in vision. — (1SM 40)
EGW: “Our love for one another was steadfast; it was not easily shaken. Then the power of God was manifested among us, the sick were healed, and there was much calm, sweet, holy joy. — (PH 157 p 24)
33. Did God work miracles to show that He was gifting the church with the Spirit of Prophecy?
EGW: “All the power and glory of God was revealed in the descent of the Holy Spirit as on the day of Pentecost, and we can never, no never lose our position in believing the facts of Bible truth. — (21LtMs, Lt 407, 1906, par. 3)
EGW: “Nothing but the miracle-working power of God has accomplished the work that has been done. We saw His power as we advanced from point to point; and we praise Him with heart and soul and voice. O how we appreciated the lovingkindness of our God as He led us on step by step! — (AUGleaner June 17, 1903, par. 5)
34. What was the specific miracle that involved the locking of Ellen White’s mind?
EGW: “During this whole time I could not understand the reasoning of the brethren. My mind was locked, as it were, and I could not comprehend the meaning of the scriptures we were studying. This was one of the greatest sorrows of my life. — (SpTB02 57.1)
EGW: “When they came to the point in their study where they said, ‘we can do nothing more,’ the Spirit of the Lord would come upon me, I would be taken off in vision, and a clear explanation of the passages we had been studying would be given me, with instruction as to how we were to labor and teach effectively. — (SpTB02 56.4)
EGW: “but when our brethren who had assembled for study, came to a point where they could go no farther, and had recourse to earnest prayer, the Spirit of God would rest upon me, and I would be taken off in vision, and be instructed in regard to the relation of scripture to scripture. — (RH June 14, 1906, par. 18)
35. How did God use the locking of Ellen White’s mind to convince the pioneers of truth?
EGW: “The brethren knew that when not in vision, I could not understand these matters, and they accepted as light direct from heaven the revelations given. — (SpTB02 57.1)
EGW: “These experiences were repeated over and over and over again. Thus many truths of the third angel's message were established, point by point. — (RH June 14, 1906, par. 18)
EGW: “I was in this condition of mind until all the principal points of our faith were made clear to our minds, in harmony with the word of God. — (SpTB02 57.1)
EGW: “Thus it was every point of our faith was established in harmony with the Word of God. — (19LtMs, Ms 46, 1904)
36. How long was Ellen White’s mind locked?
EGW: “For two or three years my mind continued to be locked to an understanding of the Scriptures. — (SpTB02 57.1)
This was one of the greatest sorrows of my life. — (SpTB02 57.1)
37. What miracle took place just before Ellen White’s mind was unlocked?
EGW: “In the course of our labors, my husband and I visited Father Andrews, who was suffering intensely with inflammatory rheumatism. We prayed for him. I laid my hands on his head, and said, Father Andrews, the Lord Jesus maketh thee whole. He was healed instantly. — (SpTB02 57.2)
EGW: “He got up, and walked about the room, praising God, and saying, “I never saw it on this wise before. Angels of God are in this room.” The glory of the Lord was revealed. — (SpTB02 57.2)
EGW: “Light seemed to shine all through the house, and an angel's hand was laid upon my head. From that time to this I have been able to understand the word of God. — (SpTB02 57.2)
38. To Whom did the pioneers give the glory, and who was their Leader?
EGW: “I write this that all may know that there is no controversy among Seventh-day Adventists over the question of leadership. The Lord God of heaven is our King. He is a leader whom we can safely follow, for He never makes a mistake. Let us honor God and His Son, through whom He communicates with the world. — (8T 238.1)
39. What was the special spiritual gift which the Lord bestowed upon Ellen White?
EGW: “From the year 1844 till the present time I have received messages from the Lord and have given them to His people. This is my work—to give to the people the light that the Lord gives me. I am commissioned to receive and communicate His messages. I am not to appear before the people as holding any other position than that of a messenger with a message. — (8T 237.4)
EGW: “We accepted the truth point by point, under the demonstration of the Holy Spirit. I would be taken off in vision, and explanations would be given me. — (21LtMs, Lt 50, 1906)
40. Was Ellen White given the supernatural ability to discern truth and expose error?
EGW: “The power of God would come upon me, and I was enabled clearly to define what is truth and what is error. As the points of our faith were thus established, our feet were placed upon a solid foundation. — (21LtMs, Lt 50, 1906)
EGW: “The great principles of truth brought from the Bible under the Spirit’s guidance are of no less importance now than in the beginning of our work. At that time there were wonderful manifestations of the Holy Spirit in the detection of false doctrines. — (20LtMs, Lt 191, 1905, par. 7)
41. Were the early pioneers and Ellen White convinced that God would protect them from error?
EGW: “Elder James White, Elder J. N. Andrews, Elder Haskell, Elder Loughborough, and I had to meet the various phases of error that sought to come in as present truth. When these false doctrines strove for entrance, we consulted God in prayer, and He revealed Himself to us. — (20LtMs, Lt 191, 1905, par. 8)
EGW: “Men and women came to the different places where meetings were appointed to be held, to see if they could not bring in their false theories. But although they would advance erroneous and sometimes fanatical teachings, we had the truth so firmly established in our minds that we had nothing to fear. — (21LtMs, Lt 38, 1906, par. 2)
EGW: “Notwithstanding specious, seducing sentiments are coming in, we hold the beginning of our confidence firm unto this time, and shall unto the end. — (21LtMs, Lt 407, 1906, par. 3)
42. What was one experience where Ellen White was able to expose error?
EGW: “Our first conference (1948) in Western New York was at Volney in Brother Arnold's barn. There were about thirty-five present, all that could be collected in that part of the State, but there were hardly two agreed. Each was strenuous for his views, declaring that they were according to the Bible. All were anxious for an opportunity to advance their sentiments and preach to us. — (LS80 247.2)
EGW: “The light of heaven then rested upon me, and I was soon lost to earthly things. My accompanying angel presented before me some of the errors of those present, and also the truth in contrast with their errors…Our meeting closed triumphantly. Truth gained the victory. Our brethren renounced their errors and united upon the third angel's message, and God greatly blessed them and added many to their numbers. — (LS 111}
43. Since God revealed errors to the pioneers, were they convinced they had the truth?
EGW: “The precious, golden links of truth are not separate, detached, disconnected doctrines; but link after link, form one string of golden truth, and constitute a complete whole, with Christ as its living center….Oh, what truths we have—full of power, and it is not possible to controvert these Bible doctrines. — (PH002 25.2)
EGW: “We may be strengthened and confirmed in the past experience that holds us to the essential points of truth which have made us what we are—Seventh-day Adventists. The past fifty years have not dimmed one jot or principle of our faith as we received the great and wonderful evidences that were made certain to us. — (20LtMs, Lt 326, 1905)
EGW: “Not a word is changed or denied. That which the Holy Spirit testified to as truth after the passing of the time, in our great disappointment, is the solid foundation of truth. Pillars of truth were revealed, and we accepted the foundation principles that have made us what we are—Seventh-day Adventists, keeping the commandments of God and having the faith of Jesus. — (20LtMs, Lt 326, 1905)
EGW: “I know and understand that we are to be established in the faith, in the light of the truth given us in our early experience. — (2LtMs, L50, 1906)
44. Was this the platform of eternal truth upon which we should be standing?
“I have been shown that many would go out from us giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. The Lord desires that those who claim to believe the truth shall have an intelligent knowledge of what is truth. False prophets will arise, and will deceive many. Everything will be shaken that can be shaken. Then does it not behoove every one of us to understand the reasons of our faith? In place of having so many sermons, there should be more close searching of the word of God text by text, and searching for strong evidence that to sustain the fundamental doctrines that have brought us where we now are, upon the platform of eternal truth.” EA 349.4
“I beseech those who are laboring for God not to accept the spurious for the genuine. Let not human reasoning be placed where sanctifying truth should be. Christ is waiting to kindle faith and love in the hearts of His people. Let not erroneous theories receive countenance from the people who ought to be standing firm on the platform of eternal truth. God calls upon us to hold firmly to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority.” GW 308.2

45. What did the Seventh-day Adventist pioneers believe in the early days of the church?
46. Did the early pioneers study and understand the personality of God, and of Christ?
But I have ever had the same testimony to bear which I now bear regarding the personality of God. — (18LtMs, Lt 253, 1903, par. 9
Those who try to bring in theories that would remove the pillars of our faith concerning the sanctuary, or concerning the personality of God or of Christ, are working as blind men. They are seeking to bring in uncertainties and to set the people of God adrift, without an anchor. — (20LtMs, Ms 62, 1905, par. 14)
47. Was this light which God gave the pioneers and Ellen White to remain truth until the end?
Plant your feet firmly on the platform of eternal truth. Reject every phase of error, even though it be covered with a semblance of reality, which denies the personality of God and of Christ. — (RH August 31, 1905 Par. 11)
We are on the very same foundation; we have the same evidence, and we worked on it day and night, to know in regard to the sanctuary question, and in regard to the personality of God, and of Christ, and of all these subjects. — (21 LtMs, Ms 138, 1906)
Thus light was given that helped us to understand the scriptures in regard to Christ, His mission, and His priesthood. A line of truth extending from that time to the time when we shall enter the city of God, was made plain to me, and I gave to others the instruction that the Lord had given me. — (RH May 25, 1905)
EGW: “The message the Lord has given me to bear has been in a straight line from light to light, upward and onward from truth to advanced truth. — (EA 216)
48. If Ellen White said that the writings of the early pioneers should be reprinted 50 years later, wouldn’t that show that she approved of what they had written earlier?
EGW: “In the place of being confused in regard to the foundation of our faith, which has been confirmed by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the place of building flimsy foundations upon the sands of error, let us hold fast to the great principles of truth given us, refusing to be moved. — (20LtMs, Lt 183, 1905, par. 18)
EGW: “We can confidently say, The truth that has come to us through the Holy Spirit’s working is not a lie. The evidences given for the last half century bear the evidence of the Spirit’s power. — (20LtMs, Lt 183, 1905, par. 20)
EGW: “In the Word of God we have found the truth that substantiates our faith. God has given us sacred, holy truths. Let us hold them fast. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “We are to hold fast the first principles of our denominated faith, and go forward from strength to increased faith. — (SpTB07 57.1)
EGW: “Ever we are to keep the faith that has been substantiated by the Holy Spirit of God from the earlier events of our experience until the present time. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “We need to present to the people the way in which God has led us in the past, and to recount his wondrous works in behalf of his people. — (RH March 19, 1895, par. 2)
EGW: “I am instructed to say that we are now to present these truths, in plainness and simplicity, to the people of God. — (20LtMs, Lt 183, 1905, par. 20)
EGW: “The truth for this time, God has given us as a foundation for our faith. He Himself has taught us what is truth. — (PH020 14.2)
EGW: “But not one jot or tittle of the light God has given me, that has been published, has been proven by the Word to be error. — (21LtMs, Ms 34, 1906, par. 6)
EGW: “I have the most precious matter to reproduce and place before the people in testimony form. While I am able to do this work, the people must have these things to revive past history, that they may see that there is one straight chain of truth, without one heretical sentence, in that which I have written. — (20LtMs, Lt 329a 1905)
EGW: “The great truths that we then received are in print and will speak; for they are the teaching of the Spirit of God and are immortalized. God has justified these truths, which have been traced out under the dictation of the Holy Spirit. — (20LtMs, Lt 191, 1905, par. 9)
EGW: “After the passing of the time, God entrusted to His faithful followers the precious principles of present truth. These principles were not given to those who had had no part in the giving of the first and second angels’ messages. They were given to the workers who had had a part in the cause from the beginning. — (20LtMs, Ms 129, 1905, par. 5)
EGW: “God is leading out a people to stand in perfect unity upon the platform of eternal truth. — (16LtMs, Ms 135, 1901, par. 12)
EGW: “So we are to hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. Words of power have been sent by God and by Christ to this people, bringing them out from the world, point by point, into the clear light of present truth. With lips touched with holy fire, God's servants have proclaimed the message. The divine utterance has set its seal to the genuineness of the truth proclaimed. — (8T 297)
EGW: “ [I] have borne a straight testimony under the power of the Holy Spirit. I have also sent many messages of counsel and warning. The Lord has given me opportunity by voice and pen to reveal to those in Battle Creek that I am standing on the platform of eternal truth. — (21LtMs, Lt 136, 1906, par. 7)
—the same truth that God gave to the pioneers of the third angel’s message, point by point, through a study of the Word, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I have given them the truth as God has given it to me—truth that has been the light and assurance of His people for the past half century. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “I asked the meaning of the shaking I had seen and was shown that it would be caused by the straight testimony called forth by the counsel of the True Witness to the Laodiceans. This will have its effect upon the heart of the receiver, and will lead him to exalt the standard and pour forth the straight truth. Some will not bear this straight testimony. They will rise up against it, and this is what will cause a shaking among God's people. — (EW 270.2)
EGW: “The Lord calls for a renewal of the straight testimony borne in years past. He calls for a renewal of spiritual life. The spiritual energies of His people have long been torpid, but there is to be a resurrection from apparent death….I beseech those who are laboring for God not to accept the spurious for the genuine. — (8T 297-298, 1904)
EGW: “Let not human reason be placed where divine, sanctifying truth should be. Christ is waiting to kindle faith and love in the hearts of His people. Let not erroneous theories receive countenance from the people who ought to be standing firm on the platform of eternal truth. God calls upon us to hold firmly to the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “Messages of every order and kind have been urged upon Seventh-day Adventists to take the place of the truth which, point by point, has been sought out by prayerful study and testified to by the miracle-working power of the Lord. — (20LtMs, Ms 44, 1905, par. 21)
EGW: “But the waymarks which have made us what we are are to be preserved, and they will be preserved as God has signified through His Word and through the testimony of His Spirit. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “This was demonstrated by the Holy Spirit. Light, precious light from God, established the main points of our faith as we hold them today. And these truths are to be kept before the mind. — (2LtMs, L50, 1906)
EGW: “The truths given us after the passing of the time in 1844 are just as certain and unchangeable as when the Lord gave them to us in an answer to our urgent prayers. The visions that the Lord has given me are so remarkable that we know that what we have accepted is the truth. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “A few of the old standard-bearers are still living. I am intensely desirous that our brethren and sisters shall respect and honor these pioneers. We present them before you as men who know what trials are. — (17LtMs, Lt 47, 1902, par. 12)
EGW: “I am instructed to say, Let every believer respect the men who acted a prominent part during the early days of the message, and who have borne trials and hardships and many privations. These men have grown gray in service. Not long hence, they will receive their reward. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “The pioneer workers among us are to be respected and loved. I have been repeatedly instructed that God has a special message and a special work for the aged men who pioneered the cause when there were so many hardships to be borne. — (19LtMs, Lt 59, 1904)
EGW: “If they [the Pioneers] would recount the sacrifices made by those who led out in the work, and would keep before the people the simplicity of the early workers and the power of God that was manifested to keep the work free from error, delusion, and extravagance, they would have a molding influence upon the workers at this time. — (CTr 140.2)
EGW: “A decided change needs to take place in the sentiments of some of our younger ministers who are inclined to disparage the efforts of these pioneer workers. These aged, tried, faithful servants of the cross are to be honored, and their testimony is to be appreciated. — (19LtMs, Lt 59, 1904)
EGW: “We are to repeat the words of the pioneers in our work, who knew what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our work. They moved forward step by step under the influence of the Spirit of God. One by one these pioneers are passing away. The word given me is, Let that which these men have written in the past be reproduced. — (RH May 15, 1905)
EGW: “The Lord speaks to His people through chosen men who have had a lifelong experience in His work. These aged workers have been tried and tested, and their experience is to be highly prized. Young, inexperienced ministers should not be placed before the pioneers of the message. — (25LtMs, Ms 55, 1911, par. 20)
EGW: “We prize very highly the old soldiers of the cross. The messengers of God who have been in the work from the passing of the time in 1844 have seen the truth established and settled. Their experience we highly appreciate. — (20LtMs, Lt 191, 1905, par. 11)
EGW: “When men come in who would move one pin or pillar from the foundation which God has established by His Holy Spirit, let the aged men who were pioneers in our work speak plainly, and let those who are dead speak also by reprinting of their articles in our periodicals. — (20LtMs, Ms 62, 1905, par. 20)
EGW: “Gather up the rays of divine light that God has given as He has led His people on step by step in the way of truth. This truth will stand the test of time and trial. — (20LtMs, Ms 62, 1905, par. 20)
EGW: “Repeat the words of the pioneers in our work, who knew what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our work. — (RH May 25, 1905)
EGW: “I have been instructed that we should make prominent the testimony of some of the old workers who are now dead. Let them continue to speak through their articles as found in the early numbers of our papers. These articles should now be reprinted, that there may be a living voice from the Lord’s witnesses. The history of the early experiences in the message will be a power to withstand the masterly ingenuity of Satan’s deceptions. This instruction has been repeated recently. — (20LtMs, Lt 99, 1905, par. 7)
EGW: “But the evidence given in our early experience has the same force that it had then. The truth is the same as it ever has been, and not a pin or a pillar can be moved from the structure of truth. That which was sought for out of the Word in 1844, 1845, and 1846 remains the truth today in every particular. — (21 LtMs, Lt 38, 1906)
EGW: “The truth that we proclaim today is the same truth that we have proclaimed for the last fifty years. — (20LtMs, Lt 39, 1905)
EGW: “I appreciate the truth, every jot of it, just as it has been given to me by the Holy Spirit for the last fifty years. I desire every one to know that I stand on the same platform of truth that we have maintained for more than half a century. — (20LtMs, Ms 142, 1905)
EGW: “In this time, when false doctrines are being taught, we are to teach the same truth that we have taught for the past half century. I have not changed my faith one jot or one tittle. — (21LtMs, Lt 150, 1906)
EGW: “But I have ever had the same testimony to bear which I now bear regarding the personality of God. — (18LtMs, Lt 253, 1903, par. 9
EGW: “The rich experience given us during the last fifty years has never been denied, but year after year evidence has been multiplied to confirm, and not to entangle and confuse. The Lord God never contradicts Himself. — (21LtMs, Lt 156, 1906)
EGW: “We are not to receive the words of those who come with a message that contradicts the special points of our faith….if such application moves one pillar from the foundation that God has sustained these fifty years, is a great mistake.— (Preach the Word, p. 5 (1905) CW 32)
EGW: “He who makes such an application knows not the wonderful demonstration of the Holy Spirit that gave power and force to the past messages that have come to the people of God. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “The instruction that was given in the early days of the message is to be held as safe instruction to follow in these its closing days. — (RH, July 18, 1907)
EGW: “The very last deception of Satan will be to make of none effect the testimony of the Spirit of God. — (FLB 296.6)
EGW: “Men may get up scheme after scheme, and the enemy will seek to seduce souls from the truth, but all who believe that the Lord has spoken through Sister White, and has given her a message, will be safe from the many delusions that will come in in these last days. — (21LtMs, Lt 50, 1906, par. 6)
EGW: “There is to be no undermining of the fundamental truths that the Lord has submitted by many miraculous evidences. — (OFC 270.2)
EGW: “We want to know that our feet are planted on the platform of eternal truth. — (25 M135, 1909)
EGW: “We must know that our feet are firmly planted on the platform of truth. — (21LtMs, Lt 72, 1906, par. 28)
EGW: “Therefore it requires stern faith and firm principle to place the feet upon the platform of truth. — (RH September 27, 1887, par. 17)
EGW: “Those who have the truth as it is revealed in that holy word, must stand fast on the platform of truth, relying on, “It is written.” — (ST February 26, 1885, par. 12)
EGW: “… be afraid to trust the suppositions and devising of any human being who entertains the thought that the path over which the people of God have been led for the last fifty years is a wrong path. — (18LtMs, Ms 137, 1903)
EGW: “Those who seek to remove the old landmarks are not holding fast; they are not remembering how they have received and heard. — (20LtMs, Ms 62, 1905, par. 14)
EGW: “Those who try to bring in theories that would remove the pillars of our faith concerning the sanctuary, or concerning the personality of God or of Christ, are working as blind men. They are seeking to bring in uncertainties and to set the people of God adrift, without an anchor. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “The power of Heaven has been wanting to give new perceptions in reading the truth out of the Word. But blind minds and hardened hearts have condemned the truth of God as presented because they rebel against the fundamental doctrines received. They are not half enlightened as to what the fundamental doctrines really are. — (PH157 20.1)
EGW: “I have been hoping that there would be a thorough reformation, and that the principles for which we fought in the early days, and which were brought out in the power of the Holy Spirit, would be maintained. — (SpTB02 56.3)
EGW: “The very pillars of truth will be assailed…Even youth of little experience presume to insinuate doubts concerning the fundamental principles of Christianity. — (GC88 600.2)
EGW: “Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature. — (SpTB02 16.2)
EGW: “I entreat every one to be clear and firm regarding the certain truths that we have heard and received and advocated. The statements of God’s Word are plain. — (RH August 31, 1905 Par. 11)
EGW: “Plant your feet firmly on the platform of eternal truth. Reject every phase of error, even though it be covered with a semblance of reality, which denies the personality of God and of Christ. — (RH August 31, 1905 Par. 11)
EGW: “We are on the very same foundation; we have the same evidence, and we worked on it day and night, to know in regard to the sanctuary question, and in regard to the personality of God, and of Christ, and of all these subjects. — (21 LtMs, Ms 138, 1906)
EGW: “Our people need to understand the reasons of our faith and our past experiences. How sad it is that so many of our people apparently place unlimited confidence in men who present theories tending to uproot our past experiences and to remove the old landmarks! — (18LtMs, Lt 283, 1903)
EGW: “Those who can be so easily led by a false spirit show that they have been following the wrong captain for some time—so long that they do not discern that they are departing from the faith, or that EGW: “they are not building upon the true foundation. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “We need to urge all to put on their spiritual eyeglasses, to have their eyes anointed that they may see clearly and discern the true pillars of the faith. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “The Lord has declared that the history of the past shall be rehearsed as we enter upon the closing work. Every truth that He has given for these last days is to be proclaimed to the world. Every pillar that He has established is to be strengthened. We cannot now step off the foundation that God has established. — (20LtMs, Ms 129, 1905, par. 6)
EGW: “But the waymarks which have made us what we are are to be preserved, and they will be preserved as God has signified through His Word and through the testimony of His Spirit. He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (20LtMs, Ms 44, 1905, par. 21)
EGW: “Stand firmly in the faith in which God has led us for the last fifty years. — (22LtMs, Lt 152, 1907, par. 5)
EGW: “God has led us in the past, giving us truth, eternal truth. By this truth we are to stand. — (SpTB07 38.2
EGW: “Those who acted a part in the message in its early days should rejoice over the thought of repeating the truths whose presentation was then so signally blessed of God. — (24LtMs, Ms 101, 1909, par. 9)
EGW: “Praise the Lord that we have clear light, and a plain, distinct message to bear. — (15LtMs, Lt 118, 1900, par. 20)
EGW: “I have carried a heavy burden because of the publication of Living Temple. I think that the Lord has permitted this matter to develop in order to arouse our people to understand and value aright the fundamental truths that, as a people, we have received from the Word of God. We must know that we have not followed cunningly devised fables. Our Father bids us call to mind the former days, after which, when we were illumined, we endured a great fight of affliction. — (18LtMs, Lt 262, 1903, par. 9)
EGW: “I have received most precious assurances that our early experiences were of God. I wish that every one of our people might know, as I know, of the sure and certain way in which the Lord led us in times past. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “I testify the things which I have heard, the things which I have seen, the things which my hands have handled of the Word of Life. And this testimony I know to be of the Father and the Son. We have seen and do testify that the power of the Holy Ghost has accompanied the presentation of the truth, warning with pen and voice, and giving the messages in their order. To deny this work would be to deny the Holy Ghost, and would place us in that company who have departed from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits. — (6LtMs, Ms 28, 1890, par. 5)
EGW: “What have we to give up of the leadings and teachings of God as seen in the first chapters of our experience, after the passing of the time and our bitter experience? Nothing. — (21LtMs, Lt 38, 1906, par. 8)
EGW: “We have held this truth firmly for the past half century, and as we review our history, we see that we have been led and taught of God. We have had most precious and positive testimony to bear from the Word. — (Ibid.)
EGW: “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history. — (7LtMs, Lt 32, 1892, par. 38)
EGW: “God calls upon us to hold firmly to the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (8T 297-298, 1904)
EGW: “He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (20LtMs, Ms 44, 1905, par. 21)
EGW: “One thing it is certain is soon to be realized—the great apostasy, which is developing and increasing and waxing stronger and will continue to do so until the Lord shall descend from heaven with a shout. — (20LtMs, Ms 111, 1905, par. 1)
EGW: “We are to hold fast the first principles of our denominated faith… substantiated by the Holy Spirit of God from the earlier events of our experience….the foundation principles. — (20LtMs, Lt 326, 1905)
EGW: “Were this reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. — (SpTB02 54.3)
EGW: “I tell you now, that when I am laid to rest, great changes will take place. I do not know when I shall be taken; and I desire to warn all against the devices of the devil. I want the people to know that I warned them fully before my death. — (25LtMs, Ms 1, 1915, par. 2)

78. Did Ellen White specifically instruct us to study the Fundamental Principles?
Let us seek to become familiar with the books that clearly outline the truths for this time. Let us make a careful study of the fundamental principles of the message that is being proclaimed by God’s children throughout the world. — (22LtMs, Ms 143, 1907)
79. Did Ellen White tell us to hold firmly to the Fundamental Principles?
EGW: “Let not human reason be placed where divine, sanctifying truth should be. Christ is waiting to kindle faith and love in the hearts of His people. Let not erroneous theories receive countenance from the people who ought to be standing firm on the platform of eternal truth. God calls upon us to hold firmly to the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (8T 297-298, 1904)
— (20LtMs, Ms 44, 1905, par. 21)
EGW: “He calls upon us to hold firmly, with the grip of faith, to the fundamental principles that are based upon unquestionable authority. — (20LtMs, Ms 44, 1905, par. 21)
80. Did Ellen White repeat the Fundamental Principles in her writings?
- I - That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things, omnipotent, omniscient, and eternal, infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable, and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit.
II - That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, the one by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist…A Declaration of the Fundamental Principles Taught and Practiced by the Seventh-day Adventists,” 1872, from Adventist Archives
Following you will find quotations by Ellen White where she used the very words found in the Fundamental Principles. Obviously, she agreed with them!
I – That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things, omnipotent, omniscient, and eternal; infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable, and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit.
II – That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, the one by whom he created all things, and by whom they do consist;
• Fundamental Principle #1: That there is one God, — (1 Cor. 8:6)

“There is one God, one faith, one baptism. There is one Lord Jesus, who must abide in the soul of every one of these brethren.” — (RH November 12, 1889, par. 8)
• Fundamental Principle #1: a personal, spiritual being, —
“God is a spirit; yet He is a personal being, for man was made in His image. As a personal being, God has revealed Himself in His Son.” — (Ed 131)
“God is a Spirit; yet He is a personal Being; for so He has revealed Himself:” — (MH 413.1)
“The reasoning that God is not a personal being is greatly dishonoring to Him.” — (20LtMs, Ms 127, 1905, par. 13)
• Fundamental Principle #1: the creator of all things,
“Lead your children to regard God as the Creator of all things, and to reverence and fear him who is exalted above the heavens, and to love him because he first loved them.” — (HR 172)
“By this commandment God is pointed out as a God above all other gods, for He is the Creator of all things.” — (15LtMs, Ms 28, 1900, par. 23)
“God is the superintendent as well as the Creator of all things. The divine Being is engaged in upholding the things which He has created.” — (13LtMs, Ms 92, 1898, par. 11)
• Fundamental Principle #1: omnipotent, omniscient and eternal, — (Rev. 19:6, Deut 33:27)
“God is omnipotent, omniscient, immutable. He always pursues a straightforward course. His law is truth—unchanging, eternal truth. His precepts are consistent with His attributes.” — (17LtMs, Ms 1, 1902)
“The power of the eternal Father, and the sacrifice of the Son, should be studied more than it is.” — (LUH November 3, 1909, par. 3)
• Fundamental Principle #1: infinite in wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy; unchangeable —
“The Lord possesses infinite wisdom and omnipotent power. His goodness and mercy, infinite goodness, justice. — (6LtMs, Ms 40, 1890, par. 88)
“The Eternal Father, the unchangeable one, gave his only begotten Son, tore from his bosom Him who was made in the express image of his person” — (RH July 9, 1895, par. 13)
• Fundamental Principle #1: and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit. Ps. 139:7. — (Ps. 51:11)
“The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. “The Lord's throne is in heaven” (Psalm 11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present.” — (ED 132)
“The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place…. By His Spirit He is everywhere present.” — (MH 417)
• Fundamental Principle #2: That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, — (1 Cor. 8:6)
“Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things.—1 Corinthians 8:6.” — (JNN 158.1)
“Christ is the One through whom God has at all times revealed Himself to man. “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him.” 1 Corinthians 8:6.” — (PP 761)
• Fundamental Principle #2: the Son of the Eternal Father, — (1 John 1:3)
“They have refused to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God, and they have no more reverence for the eternal Father than for his Son, Jesus Christ. They have neither the Son nor the Father.” — (2RED 95)
“The power of the eternal Father, and the sacrifice of the Son, should be studied more than it is.” — (LUH November 3, 1909
“The glory of the Eternal Father is enshrouding his Son.” — (GC88, 664)
“The Eternal Father, the unchangeable one, gave his only begotten Son, tore from his bosom Him who was made in the express image of his person, and sent him down to earth to reveal how greatly he loved mankind.” — (RH July 9, 1895)
…that He gave His only-begotten Son,”—not a son by creation, as were the angels, nor a son by adoption, as is the forgiven sinner, but a Son begotten in the express image of the Father's person. — (ST May 30, 1895, par. 3)
• Fundamental Principle #2: the One by whom God created all things, and by whom they do consist; — (Heb 1:2, Col 1:17)
“The apostle exalted Christ before his brethren as the One by whom God had created all things …all things were created by Him, and for Him: and He is before all things, and by Him all things consist.’ ” — (AA 471)
81. Was Ellen White rebaptized by her non-trinitarian husband James?
James White wrote: “On receiving baptism at my hands, at an early period of her [Ellen G. White’s] experience, as I raised her up out of the water, immediately she was in vision.” (James White, Life Incidents, p. 274, year 1868)
James baptized Ellen in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. As a non-trinitarian, this was his belief:
“God's ambassadors, Christ's true ministers, by the authority of their great commission, baptize ‘in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.’ This not only shows the importance of baptism, but that both the Father and the Son, and also the Holy Spirit, have a part in the conversion of sinners. The Father is our lawgiver, Christ our mediator, and the Holy Spirit our reprover, comforter and sanctifier.” (“Ambassadors for Christ” James White, Signs of the Times – November 14, 1878)
This clearly shows that James, as a non-trinitarian, believed in the Heavenly Trio in the same way that Ellen White did. They shared the same belief.
82. Did God send Ellen White to various places to correct error?
I was directed to go to the places where these theories were being advocated, and as I went, the power of the Spirit was wonderfully displayed in rebuking the errors that were creeping in. 18LtMs, Ms 135, 1903
God has, in that Word, promised to give visions in the last days; not for a new rule of faith, but for the comfort of His people, and to correct those who err from Bible truth. EW 78
I then went into the room where Phebe Knapp was groaning and crying out. I bowed in their midst and asked God to hear me, and for His own glory manifest Himself to these poor, deceived souls, and to show them that we had come to do them good, and to convince them of error, and give them evidence that this was a false burden, and rebuke it. P. K.’s burden left her immediately. After exhorting them faithfully and declaring to them their errors, we left them. I was free. I had performed a disagreeable task and the Lord had sustained me. 1LtMs, Ms 9, 1859, par. 12
At this time there was fanaticism among some of those who had been believers in the first message. Serious errors in doctrine and practice were cherished, and some were ready to condemn all who would not accept their views. God revealed these errors to me in vision and sent me to His erring children to declare them; but in performing this duty I met with bitter opposition and reproach. 5T 655.4
83. Do the Father and Son have forms, substance, material bodies?
I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus' countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it, for said He, "If you should once behold the glory of His person, you would cease to exist.” Before the throne I saw the Advent people--the church and the world. I saw two companies, one bowed down before the throne, deeply interested, while the other stood uninterested and careless. Those who were bowed before the throne would offer up their prayers and look to Jesus; then He would look to His Father, and appear to be pleading with Him. A light would come from the Father to the Son and from the Son to the praying company. Then I saw an exceeding bright light come from the Father to the Son, and from the Son it waved over the people before the throne. But few would receive this great light. ...
There I beheld Jesus, a great High Priest, standing before the Father. On the hem of His garment was a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate. Those who rose up with Jesus would send up their faith to Him in the holiest, and pray, "My Father, give us Thy Spirit." Then Jesus would breathe upon them the Holy Ghost. In that breath was light, power, and much love, joy, and peace. Early Writings, p. 54-55, 1882
I have often seen the lovely Jesus, that he is a person. I asked him if his Father was a person, and had a form like himself. Said Jesus, ‘I am in the express image of my Father's Person.’ 2 SG 74
Before Christ left Heaven, and came into the world to die, he was taller than any of the angels. He was majestic and lovely. “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.” He took upon himself man's nature. When his ministry commenced, he was but little taller than the common size of men then living upon the earth. Had he come among men with his noble, heavenly form, his outward appearance would have attracted the minds of the people to himself, and he would have been received without the exercise of faith. 4aSG 115.1
84. Does the Spirit have a form?
There is no inspired record of the Spirit having a form, other than the assumed form of a dove at Christ’s baptism, and of tongues of fire at Pentecost.
85. Does the Spirit have a throne to sit on?
There is no inspired record of the Spirit sitting on a throne. In Revelation 4:5 we read: and there were seven of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God
86. Does the Son of God share the Father’s throne?
The King of the universe summoned the heavenly hosts before Him, that in their presence He might set forth the true position of His Son and show the relation He sustained to all created beings. The Son of God shared the Father's throne, and the glory of the eternal, self-existent One encircled both. PP 36.2
Think of Christ's coming down from glory, leaving his Father's throne, and suffering as he did for us! RH May 10, 1887, par. 19
The disciples not only saw the Lord ascend, but they had the testimony of the angels that he had gone to occupy his Father's throne in Heaven. 3SP 254.2
He takes his position at the head of humanity, covering humanity with divinity. In him humanity and divinity are combined, and he can accomplish for the human race all that is necessary to enable them to overcome as he overcame, and to sit down with him in his Father's throne. GCB April 8, 1901, par. 12

89. How are the Father and Jesus one?
“Jesus was made one with God. His exaltation created envy and jealousy in Satan’s heart. Satan insisted that God had not dealt with Him justly.” {17LtMs, Ms 1, 1902, par. 2}
The burden of that prayer was that His disciples might be one as He was one with the Father; the oneness so close that, although two distinct beings, there was perfect unity of spirit, purpose, and action. The mind of the Father was the mind of the Son. 3LtMs, Lt 1, 1882
The position of Jesus Christ in reference to His Father is in these verses brought to view. While they are one in purpose, and one in mind, yet in personality they are two. 22LtMs Ms 179, 1907
So the Father and the Son were one in their love for the chosen people. COL 216.1
From eternity there was a complete unity between the Father and the Son. They were two, yet little short of being identical; two in individuality, yet one in spirit, and heart, and character. YI December 16, 1897, par. 5
Christ and the Father are represented as two distinct personalities, but they are one in purpose. They are united in an effort to save fallen human beings and to restore them to union with themselves. 20LtMs, Lt 331, 1905
Christ joined himself with the nature of man, that through him man might again become one with God, preserving the closest union with his fellow men,—the same that exists between the Father and the Son. RH May 30, 1899, par. 5
The unity that exists between Christ and His disciples does not destroy the personality of either. They are one in purpose, in mind, in character, but not in person. It is thus that God and Christ are one. MH 422, 8T 269
90. Does inspiration ever say that the Father, Son and Spirit are one God?
No, you cannot find any inspired verse or quotation that says that they are one God.
91. Does inspiration ever describe the three-in-one God?
No, it does not.
92. What was the war in heaven over?
Christ was the only begotten Son of God, and Lucifer, that glorious angel, got up a warfare over the matter, until he had to be thrust down to the earth.” (Ellen G. White, Manuscript 86, Aug. 21, 1910)
This fact the angels would obscure, that Christ was the only begotten Son of God, 25LtMs, Lt 42, 1910, par. 3
The prince of fallen angels conducted the warfare against the only begotten Son of God. RH May 23, 1899, par. 9
Satan desired and sought to take the place of the only-begotten Son of God. It was because he could not have the place of Christ that Satan revolted in heaven. ST February 5, 1894, par. 3
[Lucifer’s] beauty was so highly exalted that he thought he should be as God, and Christ must be second to him; but the Lord informed Satan this could not be possible. Christ was His only begotten Son.— Letter 157, 1910 25LtMs, Lt 157, 1910, par. 7
When God would not concede to Satan’s claim to a place above His only begotten Son, Satan rebelled. There was war in heaven, and he was cast out. He pressed his claim to be placed above Christ, but the warfare resulted in his losing his position in the heavenly courts. 25LtMs, Lt 132, 1910, par. 4
93. Did Ellen White have a vision where she saw Jesus in heaven?
I saw the lovely Jesus, and beheld an expression of sympathy and sorrow upon his countenance. Soon I saw him approach the exceeding bright light which enshrouded the Father. Said my accompanying angel, He is in close converse with his Father. The anxiety of the angels seemed to be intense while Jesus was communing with his Father. Three times he was shut in by the glorious light about the Father, and the third time he came from the Father his person could be seen. His countenance was calm, free from all perplexity and trouble, and shone with benevolence and loveliness, such as words cannot express. He then made known to the angelic host that a way of escape had been made for lost man. He told them that he had been pleading with his Father, and had offered to give his life a ransom, and take the sentence of death upon himself, that through him man might find pardon; that through the merits of his blood, and obedience to the law of God, they could have the favor of God, and be brought into the beautiful garden, and eat of the fruit of the tree of life. 1SP 45
Said the angel, Think ye that the Father yielded up his dearly beloved Son without a struggle? No, no. It was even a struggle with the God of Heaven, whether to let guilty man perish, or to give his beloved Son to die for them. 1 SP 47
I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus’ countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it, for said He, “If you should once behold the glory of His person, you would cease to exist.” EW 55
94. Did Christ take a risk when He became incarnated?
“Christ has found his pearl of great price in lost, perishing souls. He sold all that he had to come into possession, even engaged to do the work, and run the risk of losing his own life in the conflict." (Ellen G. White, Letter 119, 1895)
“Remember that Christ risked all; "tempted like as we are," he staked even his own eternal existence upon the issue of the conflict.” (Ellen G. White, General Conference Bulletin 1st December 1895 ‘Seeking the Lost’)
“Yet into the world where Satan claimed dominion God permitted His Son to come, a helpless babe, subject to the weakness of humanity. He permitted Him to meet life's peril in common with every human soul, to fight the battle as every child of humanity must fight it, at the risk of failure and eternal loss.” (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages. Page 49 ‘Unto you a Saviour’) 3
“Never can the cost of our redemption be realized until the redeemed shall stand with the Redeemer before the throne of God. Then as the glories of the eternal home burst upon our enraptured senses we shall remember that Jesus left all this for us, that He not only became an exile from the heavenly courts, but for us took the risk of failure and eternal loss.” (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages page 131, ’The victory’)
“Had there been the least taint of sin in Christ, Satan would have bruised His head. As it was, he could only touch His heel. Had the head of Christ been touched, the hope of the human race would have perished. Divine wrath would have come upon Christ as it came upon Adam. Christ and the church would have been without hope.” (Ellen G. White, Signs of the Times, June 9th 1898, see also Selected Messages Book 1 page 256)
“Though Christ humbled Himself to become man, the Godhead was still His own. His Deity could not be lost while He stood faithful and true to His loyalty.” (Ellen G. White, The Signs of the Times, 10th May 1899, ‘Christ glorified’)
“He became subject to temptation, endangering as it were, His divine attributes. Satan sought, by the constant and curious devices of his cunning, to make Christ yield to temptation.” (Ellen G. White, Letter 5, 1900, as quoted in the Seventh-day Adventists Bible Commentary Volume 7 page 926)
“To the honor and glory of God, His beloved Son -- the Surety, the Substitute -- was delivered up and descended into the prisonhouse of the grave. The new tomb enclosed Him in its rocky chambers. If one single sin had tainted His character the stone would never have been rolled away from the door of His rocky chamber, and the world with its burden of guilt would have perished.” (Ellen G. White, Ms. 81, 1893, p. 11, Diary entry for Sunday, July 2nd, 1893, Wellington, New Zealand)
